    The original Limits of Humanity:

Is there a border we will never cross? Are there places we will never reach, no matter how hard we try? It turns out, there are. Even with sci-fi technology, we are trapped in a limited pocket of the Universe and the finite stuff within it. How much universe is there for us and how far can we go?

    1. Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell

Hey Everybody! So this video is a remake and remaster of an older video that has a mistake in it. You can watch the original here: What is the mistake? In a nutshell: In the original video we said that it was PHYSICALLY impossible to leave the local group and reach other galaxy groups. That the rest of the universe is moving away from us too fast to catch up. But that’s wrong. It is not PHYSICALLY impossible to leave the Local Group, just extremely unlikely that we’ll ever do it. BUT: If you have a lot of time and a fast spaceship you can still get to a limited amount of galaxies - these galaxies will eventually get out of reach forever but until then, they are technically within reach. So why did we keep the video up and didn’t purge it when we deleted our addiction and refugee crisis videos? Well, it has to do with the nature and severity of the mistake: We did talk to a few astrophysicists to ask them what they thought and if we should take down the video. Their feedback was pretty clear, they thought it was still fine as the universe expansion things explained in the video are correct and they didn’t consider the local group thing as too major. This was actually a case of “good enough”. Also, back when this original upload happened, Kurzgesagt was operating at pretty tight margins and just redoing a video was not easy for us. Back then the team was small and we were fighting to put new videos out. So we just swallowed the bitter pill and kept the video around. But the video still bothered us, as far as we know this was the biggest unfixed mistake on the channel. Super frustrating, especially because the core idea of the video is so fascinating. The limit of our species. The actual limit. So yeah, we finally remade the video, sorry for taking this long, life got in the way. The original video will stay up, you can compare the two if you want to see how far we have come in a few years in terms of production quality. All in all, we could only grow the channel and work on getting better because of direct support from you guys. So thank you for that. - Philipp PS: If you want, check out our shop for some new posters about the universe posters and black hole plushies and stuff like that:

This gave me a scary thought.... what if the galaxy we are in and why there isnt alien activity or federation to meet is simply that we possibly are in such a young galaxy and being so far in the edge of it we are truely alone.

      2. Fire Harry

yea me and my class at school watch your interesting videos and we enjoy them especially my teacher LOL

      3. Darren Marquis

If we look at space through the eyes of science? We will never understand the meanings and true origins. We are all source beings that were all created at the beginning, and we have have live countless lives. You are connected to everything in the universe and soon enough those who recognize their true nature will be able to connect with all of the beings in the universes. How? We are already connected, we are all one. Look at the spiritual side of the universe. It may lead you into a place of better understanding and less speculation by ‘science.’ Just a thought Love to all❤️

The good news is that by the time this event horizon is past its very possible that interstellar travel will be possible

Goes to show the incredible importance of passing on accurate scientific data through generations so that when the day comes that our future offspring doesn't see anything in the sky past our close neighbors they will know that at one time there was so very much.

I shouldn't have watched this video. It depresses me that we will never see so much of the universe....ever. I already had slim hopes for humanity since it took us approximately 200,000 years to get to this point. And we only barely explored the neighboring planets and moons, most of which unmanned. I just get the feeling humanity is going to keep running itself into the ground and killing the planet till they go extinct. And like stated in the video, we haven't even figured out how to leave our own milky way. Likely...never will.

    23. stepchild

Can we do this without the big bang theory

    24. Willaim Steleson

Not really. You r thinking of traveling the universe by traditional propulsion,Trying to make something with mass travel @ the speed of light. However, if humanity can somehow manufacture and manipulate artifical gravity, which is the bending/distortion of spacetime. But unlike in nature, which is a by product mass in the spacetime continuum. Then instead of moving THROUGH space, you can MOVE space (and time). In a gravitational envelope, In which u can move faster than the speed of light. However u would need a stable version of element 116....

    25. Just Another Shitty YouTube Channel

I sometimes wonder; in that future, when they invent teleportation, what happens when your sister actually turns off the wifi while you are teleporting? Would you float in the space or would u be rendered halfway & be a son of a glitch the rest of ur life? 🤔

The speed of light is not the fastest speed in the universe. The speed of space is.

    30. rune masamune

Wait but unless we are right at the point where Big Bang happened there should be galaxies moving with us or towards us or staying at relatively same distance from us, so they never will be out of reach

    31. ava dawes

so basically we all started from a bubble 👁👄👁

    32. Noah Walters

Well, this is only assuming you don't have FTL technology, which is basically a must if we even want to colonize our own galaxy. And its not like these technologies aren't based on some foundation of science. Wormholes, Warp drives, and my personal favorite hyperspace drives, while potentially hundreds of years away, are all possible methods of traveling faster than light.

    33. Leon

This is the most pessimistic/optimistic video I have ever watched.

People getting sad over this is the equivalent of being told you'll only get 1 trillion dollars, not 1 quintillion, when you currently have $7.32 in your checking

    36. InHouseMaterial

I'd love to see a map of our universe of a projection of where everything is right now. Like if light was instantaneous. What would it looks like. 5 percent of what we currently see sounds so dark

    37. Dianna George

How do we know know there's two trillion galaxies in the universe. How do we know some of the universe or Galaxy and it's light have not receded from us before the first telescope was built??. Because if some galaxies have accelerated too far from us, before the first telescope was built, there's no way we can observe them.

    38. xRevolver 91

      I feel so little!!!

    39. Joe G

I kind of want to write a scifi story set in that supermassive galaxy in the far future now. Definitely going to change the name though.

Who knows we maybe living in a Speck like the movie "Horton Hears a Who!". One thing is sure, human mind can never be able to comprehend the Universe, no matter how many gazillion years we survive.

    51. That One Strange Person

Nobody's talking about how the narrator called us all birbs? Smh.

    52. KungFury

This video operates under the assumption that we will never create technology that allows us to see further. That seems unlikely,

    53. Egbert Noot

I think if humanity can get to at least a type 3 civ and bordering into type 4 civ, we could start to create stars to counteract the acceleration of other stars and galaxies. This might be totally insane and maybe so dumb, but with not knowing the future it could work. Any science geeks out there who can say this could be possible? or at least be there even with all of the science fiction stuff? I mean its going to take a lot of energy and manpower to create stars and planets but could we make a planet which humans can live and help to counteract the acceleration?

    54. Lectric

The thought of the existence of the universe, in general, is frightening. Just think: HOW? How was there a beginning? What is the beginning? What was before the beginning? How'd did everything come from nothing? brain hurts..

    55. Prerana Joshi

i love that they called us birbs

    56. m & m

The more l hear about the "big bang theory" the more real "tooth fairies" appear to be. 🤪 P.S Kurzgesagt, you've lost me. Sorry, but it's no wonder folk believe in a Creator! Easy as.

I hate this even though it doesn't affect me, it frustrates me regardless.

Shouldn't we be able to reach distant galaxies in the course of a lifetime, thanks to lenghts contraction? (I mean those galaxies we could theoretically reach, which are not outside of the expanding border)

    76. pcyunas

Big bang theory was disproved by scientists in the latter part of the 20th century. They observed that stars etc were not all moving away from each other but were moving "randomly". Some moving closer and some further away. However this theory has been pushed for decades and it's now difficult to let go of.

      1. Kast

Are you sure? Where are your sources?

    77. ltj1024

7:12 Starting from that point, what if they all "steer" each individual galaxies towards a central location where everybody eventually meets using technologies introduced in this channel like galaxy scale stellar engines or black hole bombs, so that they won't be separated from each other forever. The rest of the universe will still be lost to them, but they get so much more resources to spend before the eventual oblivion, a lot better than getting separated from each other forever by doing nothing.

    89. Ese Ukey

Chances are, something else would take over and the universe continues

    90. Evan C

Lol. Good stuff but as soon as Big Bang theory is mentioned, nope. Take everything you hear with a grain of salt. Or three

      1. Kast

The Big Bang theory is the only theory that stands to explain the beginning of the universe without any rivals and it's for a reason.

    91. Nicolas Badenhorst

This is all based on guess work.. What about the galaxy on a collision course with ours.. This is a flawed theory..

      1. Kast

It's not and it's explained here. Gravity in local groups is stronger as bodies are closer.

    92. cp gametronic

if other galaxies are moving faster than light speed relative to us, if we could get to light speed (or close to it) with our planet and sent ships the same speed would they go fast enough?

    93. Tan Collin

Wait I got a question why we cannot travel further weird

    94. IMax

All of this assumes we will never break (or at least sort of trick) the light barrier. If we live long enough this is inevitable.

      1. Kast

It's physically impossible, you would need to have no mass and also, there's no way to break it. For now but it seems unlikely

    95. しゅっぺー

How do we know that our galaxy is located center of universe???
